H. P. Lovecraft's Fungi from Yuggoth is a remarkable achievement. Written in little more than a week (December 27, 1929-January 4, 1930), the cycle of 36 sonnets is a compact encapsulation of the essence of Lovecraft's imaginative vision. Its central motifs-the lure of hidden worlds, cosmic alienation, the terrors lurking behind the placid surface of life-are those that structured Lovecraft's greatest weird tales.David E. Schultz has spent decades preparing this annotated edition of the Fungi. He discusses the origin of the poem (including the influence of Donald Wandrei's similar cycle, Sonnets of the Midnight Hours), its connections with Lovecraft's fiction, Lovecraft's changing thoughts on natural expression in poetry, and the complex history of the poem's publication-both as individual sonnets and as a unity. Schultz also provides penetrating annotations on every poem. This volume features the superlative artwork of longtime Lovecraftian artist Jason C. Eckhardt, who has produced a poignant cover perhaps more Lovecraftian than most seen of late, and illustrated each poem in a separate full-page edition. Readers are also treated to a reproduction of Lovecraft's handwritten manuscript of the Fungi, which shows how carefully he revised each sonnet in the course of composition, and Harold S. Farnese's sheet music for two of the sonnets, most of it never published previously. This edition takes its place as a landmark contribution to Lovecraft studies-one that allows readers to appreciate Lovecraft's most famous poem as never before.David E. Schultz is the editor of an annotated edition of Lovecraft's Commonplace Book (1987) and coeditor, with S. T. Joshi, of numerous editions of Lovecraft's letters, including A Means to Freedom: The Letters of H. P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard (2009) and Dawnward Spire, Lonely Hill: The Letters of H. P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith (2017). Schultz's revised and annotated edition of H. P. Lovecraft: Commonplace Book is forthcoming from Hippocampus Press.… (mehr)

The only thing horrible about this book is the verse itself. Some sort of Swinburne pastiche. Lovecraft's range is from bad to appalling. The early poems are particularly awful. It is a good thing that Lovecraft stuck mostly to fiction. Only for the Lovecraft, or Ballantine Adult Fantasy completist. Caveat Lector! ( )

Re-reading some of my favorite horror stories, consuming the stories as if they were some strange wines that I have kept in the basement, hidden amongst vintages less divine; with such labels blackened unreadable and corks re-affixed with age-blooded wax. Why they were hidden away in such corners of my cavern, I may never know, because I never placed them there. I just discovered and drank them with great relish. My highly eccentric taste, my refined palate, simply desired such an ancient drop of vine. I hardly noticed the copper filling my nose as I drank it down. It was only, much later, that I discovered my two cats had torn themselves to shreds. My little Olthar was still trying to consume Miss Mittens, although I could not see how Olthar could breathe with Miss Mitten's whole head inside his mouth. I giggled and looked about me... my copy of Lovecraft horrors looked half-melted and was crawling up my arm like a caterpillar.
I said, "Nice."

Contrary to what one "reviewer" posted here, H. P. Lovecraft was often quite an excellent poet, evocative and original. This is a wonderful collection of some of Lovecraft's finest verse, a reprinting of the original Arkham House hardcover edition, and containing all of the superb illustrations by Frank Utpatel (who also illustrated the one book of Lovecraft's that was publish'd during HPL's lifetime). It's interesting to see Lovecraft referencing things from his fiction or from other poems, such as the mention of Zaman's Hill and Dunwich in the haunting poem, "The Ancient Track." There are many echoes of Poe in these poems, both in matters of theme and rhythmic cadence. Among the sonnets we have "To Mr. Finlay, Upon His Drawing for Mr. Bloch's Tale, 'The Faceless God'" and Lovecraft's acrostic sonnet to Poe, "Where Once Poe Walked," which was written impromptu during a midnight visit to a place that Poe was known to haunt, St. John's churchyard in Providence. (I will be hosting a poetic picnic there next month, as part of my duties as Poet Laureate for NecronomiCon Providence 2013.) For me, Lovecraft reached his heights as poet in FUNGI FROM YUGGOTH, a delicious collection of poems that refer his Mythos and his philosophies. Lovecraft's sonnet cycle insir'd the creation of an entire book of mine own, SOME UNKNOWN GULF OF NIGHT.

Lovecraft began to write primarily as a poet, and we can see the echoes of that poetic passion in the perfect beauty of Lovecraft's excellent prose. He was every inch an Artist.

Lovecraft's poetry, especially is juvenile stuff is pretty terrible stuff, read Clark Ashton Smith if you want a decent poet. ( )
