This is my second favorite of G.K.'s fantasies, second only to Napoleon of Notting Hill. It describes a group who make proverbs literally come true (notably the man who succeeds in setting the Thames on fire, a fine ecological catastrophe later really done by the Cuyahoga) and leads in a brilliantly logical profession from a stiad retired colonel wearing a cabbage on his head to his leading a revolution. 'These tales concern the doing of things recognised as impossible to do; impossible to believe.' Tales of the Long Bow are eight ingenious episodes concerning people who do things that are proverbially impossible. The teasing intricacy of their interlocking narratives heightens the excitement, yet the tales are simple and vivid. Never far from the politics and economics of contemporary Britain, they contain subtle and engaging portraits of leading figures such as Lord Eden, Harold and Oliver Green.
