Henry VIII has proclaimed himself Supreme Head of the Church and the country is waking up to savage new laws, rigged trials and the greatest network of informers ever seen. Under the order of Thomas Cromwell, a team of commissioners is sent through the country to investigate the monasteries. There can only be one outcome: the monasteries are to be dissolved. But on the Sussex coast, at the monastery of Scarnsea, events have spiralled out of control. Cromwell's Commissioner Robin Singleton, has been found dead, his head severed from his body. His horrific murder is accompanied by equally sinister acts of sacrilege - a black cockerel sacrificed on the alter, and the disappearance of Scarnsea's Great Relic. Dr Matthew Shardlake, lawyer and long-time supporter of Reform, has been sent by Cromwell into this atmosphere of treachery and death. But Shardlake's investigation soon forces him to question everything he hears, and everything that he intrinsically believes . . .… (mehr)

Pforte der Verdammnis von C. J. Sansom (2003)

  1. 161
Der Name der Rose von Umberto Eco (Caramellunacy)
Caramellunacy: Both feature ghastly murders in a monastery in a time of religious conflict and turmoil. The Name of the Rose (medieval Italy) is more philosophical, while Dissolution (Tudor England) is more of a straight-forward historical mystery. Both offer interesting insights into the political and religious issues of the times.… (mehr)

It is a really enjoyable read. A crime story set in the era of Henry VIII and the conflicts caused by the King declaring himself head of the Church in England. While the story is an interesting thriller driven by the main character's efforts to solve the crime, the book also gives a good insight into the life and the times of Henry VIII. The King's desire to take a new wife, the various political strategies and personalities within religious and lay life colours the story throughout.
A reader might probably need an interest in English history to enjoy it properly. I found it highly likable, well-written, and it is full of suspense. I also found it was more enjoyable than the much-praised Hilary Mantel's Wolf's Hall or Bring up the Bodies, because I think Ms. Mantel writes about Tudor history in a more scholarly way. Mr. Sansom gives just as much information about the times in the text, but it is about less elite levels of Tudor society and it is easy to absorb and accept because he writes from the standpoint of Shardlake, a lawyer who has scoliosis (a curvature of the spine) and has more than his share of unfairness based wholly on his appearance. Ms. Mantel writes with great skill about Thomas Cromwell and other prominent characters who were at the centre of religious and political happenings, and her books are undoubtedly also worth reading, but I find I need to concentrate harder on her writing than on that of Mr. Sansom.
This is the first book in a series, and I am looking forward to reading through all of the others. ( )

Highly entertaining, and performs the signal service of historical fiction -- making another time come alive. Recommended.

After two friends had recommended this series I decided to give it a go. I wasn't disappointed. P. D. James meets Ellis Peters:a historical-based crime novel set during the dissolution of the monasteries. Matthew Shardlake the hunchback lawyer investigates. ( )

A well-written historical mystery, unique for both its characters and setting. A definite winner for fans of historical mystery.
