The Two Dianas is the story of Gabriel de Montgomery. The two Dianas of the title are Diana de Poitiers, mistress of King Henri II, and Diana de Castro, the daughter of Diana de Poitiers and Henri II and the beloved of Gabriel de Montgomery. The bulk of the action takes place in 1557 to 1560 and concerns the battles of St Quentin and the taking of Calais, the death of Henri II, the short reign of Francis II, and the beginning of the religious wars. It is a decent historical novel, but it lacks a certain charm and sparkle that I have come to associate with Dumas. Information found at http://www.cadytech.com/dumas/ indicates that this work is likely more Paul Meurice than Alexander Dumas. 1327. The Two Dianas Volume One, by Alexandre Dumas (read 22 Apr 1975) 1328. The Two Dianas Volume Two, by Alexandre Dumas (read 24 Apr 1975) This is based on the life of Gabriel Montgomery, prominent during the reigns of Henry II, Francis II, and Charles IX, and who was the opponent of Henry II at the tournament of June 30, 1559, when Henry II was fatally injured. Diana de Poitiers was the mistress of Henry II and the implacable foe of Gabriel. Gabriel was trying to get his father out of prison--his father at one time was a lover of Diana--but just before Henry II had to release Gabriel's father Henry II put him in a dungeon so foul he died. So Gabriel vowed vengeance, and Dumas does not say whether the injury he gave Henry II was intentional or not. Diana de Castro is the daughter of Diana de Poitiers, and thru the whole book Gabriel does not know if she is his half-sister or not. This book is full of stilted dialogue, but I think it sticks fairly close to history and it was sure easy to read. Zeige 4 von 4 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

This early work is Alexandre Dumas s 1849 novel, The Two Dianas . It is the fictionalised tale of the fatal wounding of King Henry II of France by Gabriel, comte de Montgomery. The titular characters refer to Henry II s lover, Diana de Poitiers, and her daughter, Diana de Castro. This thrilling story is highly recommended for fans of historical fiction, and constitutes a must-read for those who have read and enjoyed any of Dumas s work. Alexandre Dumas (1802 1870) was a famous French writer. He is best remembered for his exciting romantic sagas, including "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo." Despite making a great deal of money from his writing, Dumas was almost perpetually penniless thanks to his extravagant lifestyle. His novels have been translated into nearly a hundred different languages, and have inspired over two hundred motion pictures. Many classic books such as this are becoming increasingly rare and expensive. We are republishing this classic book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author."
