One of my favorite books, much better than the movie! I loved the tale, and the characters became like family. ( ![]() I liked this one better than the first, the action started right off, there was a quest and work to get to, and off they went. I found the story more interesting as well, and in general, as I listened, I could see in the story the stuff of Disney movies - a dwarf that can turn invisible, a trio of amusing enchantresses, an underdog hero. I can still find echoes of Middle Earth and the flavor of the Lord of the Rings, but it feels an homage, and there exist in them both elements of great stories, truth, goodness, and beauty. So far, this series is shaping up to be a good starting point from which to delve into a realm of fantasy with a younger child. Another great installment in the Chronicles of Prydain, I actually liked this one more then the first. This was all about the search for the black cauldron so many new characters where introduced and while I was ultimately wrong about who was the villain in this as they aren't exactly present until the end I will say it took me by surprise since it was a character I completely forgot about, and all the signs pointed to some one else, I should have been able to catch that bit of trickery in the writing but I didn't haha. I will say this one had a greater melancholy tone this time around, from Taran wallowing in his self pity a lot and there being an actual death on the good side of the story and the end with Islimach was shocking to be honest. The whole story just kind of hung around this sad melancholy feel but it worked for the tale and I like that Alexander wasn't afraid to put death in the tale, it made it feel believable that these people are on a dangerous journey in their fight against Arawn. It of course has a happy ending but not with out tragedy before hand, and once again it wrapped up nicely and stands well on its own. Alexander's best work, by far. Which is probably why I didn't get how great it was when I first read it. But I relish the (albeit few) chances that I have to read it again. The first book is needed to establish the characters. This book is a turning point that ultimately sets up the future. You don't really need the following three. They're just a bonus. The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander is one of the series I re-read every few years because it is just that good. It is a series that builds beautifully on itself so that you remain captivated to the very end. I like that the characters are not perfect and that they learn and grow throughout the story. Lloyd Alexander has a writing style that I really enjoy.
