Summary: When things start to go wrong in town, two kids question the status quo and work together to show the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Things I liked:

Setting was quite romantic, trying to imagine the total blackness of a night with no stars or moon.

Prose style I liked it had a fairy tale quality which I always enjoy.

Things I thought could have been done better:

The final two books and prequel are more like addon short stories with the same characters (the prequel is barely related to the main story), and the final statement where the aliens are coming the help us out is just bizarre and uncalled for I think.

Highlight:

Probably the bit where she is so avaricious for the pencils that she loses her sister, I think that kind of guilty petty greed is in all of us from time to time and it I think it was very well realised in the context of the story (emberrites have almost no access to common household items). The pineapple chunks from Lizzie is another good example. ( )
