Lady Calandra should have suitors beating down her door. But her overprotective brother, the Duke of Rochford, has managed to scare off every suitable gentleman. Every man except the mysterious Earl of Bromwell, that is. Callie finds herself drawn to the enigmatic earl, despite her brother's almost violent protestations.

In defiance of her brother's wishes, Callie devises a plan to see Bromwell again, enlisting the help of matchmaker Francesca Haughston. But when shadowy secrets about the duke and the earl come to light, it may be too late for Callie to see that she's walked straight into a trap....

Francesca, Lady Haughston, steals the story, she's the best character. She's the facilitator, matchmaker, who steps in to save the day. Her foil, the Duke of Rochford, also has a star turn, as Francesca revises her opinion of him at the end of the book.

But the main story is Callie and Bromwell. Callie is the Duke's much younger sister, overprotected, and a bit naive. Bromwell is a charming stranger who her brother warns her away from, even though he's probably the most eligible gentleman on the Marriage Mart.

But wait, there's the suspicious behavior of Lady Swithington, Bromwell's much older sister. Is she trying to promote a match between her brother and Callie? Or does she have darker motives? ( )

This is not a spoiler: the heroine's brother forbids her to do something.
This is a spoiler: she thinks about it. She considers the pros and cons. She makes up her own mind rather than just acting contrary to her brother's authority. She talks about her decision with the other person it will affect and gives her the opportunity to make her own decision about the situation.

I don't want to shock anyone, but there are grown ups in this novel.

Other than that it's a standard regency romance with balls and calls, curricles in the park and terraces with dark corners. ( )

I think this is another one I threw across the room in frustration at the stupidity of the heroine. I don't think I finished it. ( )

The third in Camp's Matchmaker series. A few new revelations about the ongoing plot (I *knew* it!), but mainly this is Callie's story.

At 23, Calandra Lilles has decided to get serious about marriage, partly to get her grandmother off her back, but mainly to get out from under her brother's thumb. Usually very lenient, he put his foot down about the Earl of Bromwell, with whom Callie had been enjoying a conversation. There is obviously bad blood between Rochefort and Bromwell, but Rochefort won't explain why. So Callie ignores him and welcomes Bromwell's addresses. But Bromwell is mainly interested in revenge for his sister, whom Rochefort dishonored some fifteen years ago--or did he?

This is a romance novel, so everything turns out well, but the twists and turns on the road there are quite entertaining. ( )

The third book in the Matchmaker series. This one is about the relationships between brothers and sisters. The history of other characters is revealed and the stage is set for book four. A very good read: I enjoyed both lead characters. ( )

LADY ODELIA PENCULLY’S BIRTHDAY BALL was the event of the Season—even though the Season had not yet begun. Not to have been invited was a cause for deep social embarrassment. To have been invited and not attend was unthinkable.
