Jean Baptiste Tavernier was one of the most remarkable men of the 17th Century. The son of a Cartographer, Tavernier made six voyages to Persia and India between the years 1631-1668. At the end of his final voyage he sold Louis XIV, the Sun King of France, a fabulous 116 carat blue diamond. Louis subsequently had the stone recut into the 69 carat French Blue. This stone was stolen from the Royal Storehouse in 1792 only to re-emerge in London thirty years later cut into the famous Hope Diamond.
Tavernier was a keen observer culture, mores and history of the lands through which he traveled. He made a number of observations which appear in serious historical works of the period to this day.
In 2010, Richard W. Wise published a novel based on the Six Voyages entitled The French Blue. ( )
