Review for the end of this amazing series is pending. I purchased the series in paper back (NEW) and before I made it halfway through the first book they began falling apart and had to be held together with rubber bands. But if this book is anything like the first three then it is a gem to behold.
I couldn't put this book down. And I don't like long multi-book series as a whole. Unlike others, I enjoyed the religious conversations, the mysticism, even the descriptions of planets. I liked Raul and his sense of humor, and I even went for the romance between Raul and Aenea.
To contrast, I read this after reading Fire Upon the Deep by Vinge and found this much more engrossing. ( )
I have no idea how to rate the final incarnation of this series. This series meant a lot to me and though I think this is my least favourite book, I still have a lot of feelings.
Un ouvrage captivant par son ampleur, sa galerie de personnages, ses enjeux et la variété de ses décors. On pourra regretter que Simmons s'enlise parfois dans ses descriptions, si détaillées soient-elles (la partie sur T'ien Shan est parfois ennuyeuse à lire tant il insiste sur les noms de lieux et de protagonistes) et que son style s'alourdisse de temps en temps, cédant aux facilités des répétitions et des redondances. On pourra aussi éventuellement dénigrer le caractère d'Endymion, personnage central, pivot des destins mais se comportant régulièrement comme un gamin, s'emportant souvent, incapable de voir l'évidence et de dire les bons mots - mais cela apporte un peu de fraîcheur au prototype de héros qu'il n'est finalement pas, juste un bon gars un peu débrouillard et têtu à qui on a confié la charge de protéger un Messie. Et malgré l'évidence des enchaînements de la dernière partie, on aura du mal à empêcher les larmes de sourdre alors que se profile la conclusion et qu'on se persuade qu'on a fini avec une saga gigantesque, pleine de bruit et de fureur, mais pleine d'espoir aussi en un futur serein et cosmique pour l'humanité. Dommage que la traduction de Monique Lebailly gâche le plaisir et que de honteuses coquilles parsèment le dernier quart de l'ouvrage. ( )
