For more than 15 centuries, no one could read the strange-looking Egyptian hieroglyphs. And then in 1799 a French soldier in Napoleon's army in Egypt stumbled across the Rosetta Stone, an ancient inscription recorded in Greek, hieroglyphs, and demotic script. Many of the brightest scholars ofthe time--Egyptologists, historians, and linguists--as well as detectives, professional code breakers, and plain amateurs, all set out to decipher the forgotten words.Carol Donoughue tells us the fascinating story of the hieroglyphs and the race to decipher them, explaining how this curious writing system began with simple drawings of everyday objects. She compares the hieroglyphic system to modern alphabets in an entertaining narrative complemented withnumerous photographs and drawings, maps, historical timelines stretching from ancient Egypt to Napoleon, a glossary, and numerous sidebars. The book culminates in an edge-of-your-seat description of how the brilliant French archaeologist Champollion finally succeeded in deciphering the hieroglyphs.A final section displays an alphabet of "hieroglyphs" and offers some fun activities for children based on hieroglyphic writing.… (mehr)

Good book, well-illustrated. The discussion of the efforts at decipherment by the various scholars is perplexing; something is missing to make it make sense. There are questions directly within the text, e.g., "Why did they not take photographs?" ( )

Hieroglyphs is a book unlocking the mystery of deciphering hieroglyphs. It starts by introducing Rosetta Stone and how this stone was found in Rosetta area in Egypt by one of Napoleons soldiers. Then it fell in the hands of Britain after a war between France and Britain. They made few copies of this stone and the unlocked and unknown writings on it and sent them to different parts of the country. People who were interested to unlock this mystery worked on it. Many of them were wrong. From few people that were right, each one of them unlocked certain parts of this mystery or Rosetta Stone. After many years of attempts by different people finally Champollion was able to read and unlock the mystery of these hieroglyphs.
I enjoyed reading this book and believe the children will enjoy and learn a lot from this book, about history and how different languages are alike or different. The pictures and maps helps the reader to understand the topic fully and makes it more interesting.
