A high class battle book. the Author had been an infantry officer in Italy in WWII and thus, was aware of the mental state of soldiers required to do their jobs in a nasty winter on a mountainside. It seems quite authentic in tone. ( ) Good history, but doesn't read as smoothly as other Hibbert. The long march is a little tiresome. (2006). I reread this after a recent trip to Spain and enjoyed it more. It reminds me of Hibbert's book on Nelson and another on General Wolfe with the operatic-like deaths of the subjects (Moore, Woolfe and Nelson) highlighting each book's climax. It would be interesting to read the story from the French viewpoint. For instance, did Marshal Stoult experience similar problems with discipline and supplying his army?
