Hannah Hurnard, author of the very popular Hind's Feet on High Places, makes several interesting and helpful observations in this, a later book. She could never understand why as missionaries of different Christian denominations in Jerusalem, it was never possible to hold joint meetings with any success until she saw that, "our different doctrinal interpretaions are only parts of the whole truth, differing because of necessity, due to environment, teaching, temperament and intellectual variations, and because we are looking at truth from different angles. Most of us look only at the familiar and accustomed views which we have come to love and venerate, just because they belong to our environment and seem so naturally and beautifully right, forgetting that, even so, they are not the whole truth." The other useful discussion concerns the lifelong habit Miss Hurnard had with her thought life. "Our habits of thought make us the kind of people we are. So it was that when I was not actually praying and reading the Bible and preaching, all too often I was practicing thought habits which were proud, selfish and terribly critical of others. The old habits of a lifetime bound me so fast, like fetters on a prisoner." Victory finally came when she went on a "fast" "from critizing other people, from talking about my own victories, from reading fiction and from daydreaming." Fasting from fiction was necessary because she used novels as springboards to fantasy. A book which deals with difficult and perhaps common though little-discussed problems among Christians seeking a higher life. ( )
