The story of Suezkade is remarkably straightforward and simple for a book of nearly 400 pages. Most chapters are very short and the book is very readable.

Marc Cordesius is a young teacher who starts teaching French at a school after an introduction by a friend. Although inexperienced and not trained as a teacher, he seems to have a natural talent for teaching. Himself independently wealthy, he does not need the job for a living, so he can avoid school politics and speak his mind relatively freely. Intellectually superior to the other teachers, the head master has a high esteem of Cordesius and shields him from affairs in the school. The microcosmos of the school is a bit of a moral cesspool that the idealistic Cordesius has strayed into.

It is up to the reader to decide to what extent Cordesius is corrupted by the school. His actions have clear precedent at the school, and it is only from the perspective of the reader to decide whether Cordesius isn't just as perfidious as his predecessors and colleagues.

Likewise, the role of the student he adores is highly ambiguous. Love seems to be tainted and desctructive, and Cordesius cannot escape its tentacles. ( )

Mooi boek dat vlot leest. Boeiende ontwikkeling van het verhaal en een prachtig besluit. Ik heb er van genoten.

Zo vreselijk als mijn medebespreker het vindt, nee. Maar het is wel een extreem boek, zonder al te veel relativering.Diep-ernstig, zou ik zeggen, en dan kun je ook aan parodie denken.De andere bespreking is trouwens een overschrijver van de achterkant van het boek.Niet serieus nemen.Dit boek is een serieuze poging om ons middelbareschoolsysteem in een kwaad daglicht te stellen, in de vorm van een jonge leraar die de leerlingen middels het aanbieden van serieuze literatuur en cultuur (Franse). De man is impotent maar verder vol van alles (cultuur dus) en vooral van een jonge, anorexiale, leerlinge. in alles een dappere poging maar door het ontbreken van afstand toch minder dan andere Sieb's. Maar wel boeiend tot het bittere einde. ( )

Hoofdpersoon in Suezkade is de zesentwintigjarige Marc Cordesius, leraar Frans aan het gymnasium. Vanaf de eerste dag wordt hij getroffen door Najoua, in wie hij een zielsverwant herkent. Vanwege zijn innemende verschijning krijgt Marc direct het vertrouwen van de rector en na verloop van tijd verwerft hij een eigen lokaal, een haast paradijselijke enclave – maar voor hoe lang?
Suezkade is een roman over een geestdriftig maar precair docentschap en een fatale liefde. ( )
