After stumbling upon a hidden trove of diaries, New Yorker writer David Grann set out to solve "the greatest exploration mystery of the twentieth century": what happened to British explorer Percy Fawcett. In 1925 Fawcett ventured into the Amazon to find an ancient civilization. For centuries Europeans believed the world's largest jungle concealed the glittering El Dorado. Thousands had died looking for it, leaving many convinced that the Amazon was truly inimical to humankind. But Fawcett had spent years building his scientific case. Captivating the imagination of millions, he embarked with his 21-year-old son, determined to prove that this ancient civilization--which he dubbed "Z"--existed. Then he and his expedition vanished. Fawcett's fate--and the clues he left behind--became an obsession for hundreds who followed him. As Grann delved deeper into Fawcett's mystery, and the greater mystery of the Amazon, he found himself irresistibly drawn into the "green hell."--From publisher description.… (mehr)

I picked this up because it was about the Amazon. This sort of true-life adventure isn’t really my cup of tea. This is a history of the search by British explorer Colonel Fawcett for the El Dorado–like, or even Atlantis-like, City of Z, purported by earlier explorers to have existed in the Amazon. I learned way more than I cared to about Colonel Fawcett, and not nearly enough about the Kuikuro people, who may be the descendents of the archeological Kuhikugu settlement that may have given rise to the legend of Z. The author interjects a little too much of himself into the narrative, even an ultimately misleading teaser at the beginning. I’d have preferred to hear more about the exploits of anthropologist Michael Heckenberger, who investigated the area and lived with the Kuikuro. ( )

The book bounced around a little more than I would have liked, describing Amazon explorer Percy Fawcett along with attempts of others to find him after disappearing without a trace. The premise is good, but I may have allowed my imagination run away with me, hoping that there'd be more details of Fawcett's exploration and hardships rather than supposition of what may have occurred. But since Fawcett was lost, as well as any notes from his last quest, actual details were lost with him. I guess I was hoping for something closer to a story of Shackleton's rescue from Antarctica, or something similar to shipwrecked sailors as described in "The Pirate Coast" or "In the Heart of the Sea", or mountain explorers such as in "Into Thin Air" or "Miracle in the Andes". But those books all contained narratives given by survivors, while there were none from Fawcett's final trek into the Amazon jungle. While first-hand accounts of survival were impossible, David Grann does provide a good description of the pitfalls and hazards of Amazon exploration. So there's still a sense of adventure in the book, just not as gripping as it might have been if more was known about Fawcett's final search for the Lost City of Z. ( )

The true story of idiots who thought traipsing through the forest's of South America with little more than machetes and brilliant mustaches was a good idea. Did Percy Fawcett actually find the Lost City of Z? Regardless of the outcome, Percy Fawcett is one fascinating guy. ( )

"The rain forest was not a garden of easy abundance, but precisely the opposite. Its quiet, shaded halls of leafy opulence were not a sanctuary, but rather the greatest natural battlefield anywhere on the planet, hosting an unremitting and remorseless fight for survival that occupied every single one of its inhabitants, every minute of every day." — Candace Miller, The River of Doubt

"Explorers are not, perhaps, the most promising people with whom to build a society. Indeed, some might say that explorers become explorers precisely because they have a streak of unsociability and a need to remove themselves at regular intervals as far as possible from their fellow men." ( )

At times all I need is a brief glimpse, an opening in the midst of an incongruous landscape, a glint of lights in the fog, the dialogue of two passersby meeting in the crowd, and I think that, setting out from there, I will put together, piece by piece, the perfect city . . . If I tell you that the city toward which my journey tends is discontinuous in space and time, now scattered, now more condensed,
you must not believe the search for it can stop. - Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities
