Describes the unfortunate individuals who have been labelled freaks, like the Elephant Man, Siamese twins, and others who have been born with a grotesque physical disadvantage. The book discusses the lives these individuals led, and the way they were treated by their contemporaries.

I find this book fascinating, though I think saying it is non fiction may be optimistic. It is a mix of pure fabrication, semi information, and pictures completely unconnected to the text. The author does his best to treat the subjects as human beings, rather than seeing them only as freaks, but it's still uncomfortable reading in parts and can be a bit pitying. Still, lots of interesting anecdotes. ( )

Aaah, freaks. What would we do without them? You look in the mirror and see a less than perfect visage and you start to fear for your looks, but seeing, and reading of the people included in "The World's Most Fantastic Freaks" makes one less concerned of the crows' feet around one's eyes.

Of course, freaks are human and I think Parker has done a bang up job reminding us of this point. Joseph Merrick, the Elephant Man, comes across as the type of chap I'd be happy having brunch with, while a game of chess with former wrestler Maurice Tillet would probably make chess interesting.

These are not indepth studies of the subjects at hand but a good entry spot into the world of freaks who proved themselves to be far more human than many others. ( )

Maybe an unfair rating as I believe the research was well done. However, this was bought in a set so although it is not my choice of reading matter thought I'd read it. 'Freaks' is not a word I would use to describe some of the poor souls in this book. Surprisingly, most of them seem to have made the most of their lives and even becoming rich and famous through their 'differences'.

If you like reading about mal-formed, disadvantaged people who succeed against all odds then this is the book for you. Unfortunately, not for me. ( )
