Proud and solitary, Eel Marsh House surveys the windswept reaches of the salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway. Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, is summoned to attend the funeral Mrs Alice Drablow, the house's sole inhabitant, unaware of the tragic secrets which lie hidden behind the shuttered windows. It is not until he glimpses a wasted young woman, dressed all in black, at the funeral, that a creeping sense of unease begins to take hold, a feeling deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk of the woman in black - and her terrible purpose.… (mehr)

I've been wanting to read this book for a long time. I don't read many ghost stories or horror but every so often I decide to pick one up. This is described as 'The classic English ghost story' so it got me interested.

It's a good story, though I don't think it really got going until the second half. The locations and the atmosphere are really well described. I must admit to being a little disappointed, as I expected more suspense and horror, but the last two chapters really lifted the book and I am still thinking about the ending. It's one I'll have to read again. ( )

Published in 1983, this is a Gothic horror by Susan Hill. The story starts with Christmas eve at the home of Arthur Kipps, an elderly lawyer. Susan Hill is a British author. I believe it is a tradition in England to tell ghost stories on Christmas eve and Arthur Kipps has a ghost story and his step children are the impetus for his finally telling his story. A spectre and a haunted house, fogs, noises of a child screaming, cradles rocking all are experienced when as a young man he was sent to Crythin Gifford to attend the funeral of Mrs. Alice Drablow and settle her estate. The story is a quick read that relies on suspense and atmosphere.

I really want to say more than meh, but don't have anything else to say! The only surprising/interesting thing was the last 2 pages. 141 pages ( )

Best read in a cozy wing chair before a crackling fire, preferably near the holidays, when the mixture of melancholy and joy is at its most powerful.

Arthur Kipps is a young solicitor, sent to settle the estate of one deceased Alice Drablow, whose great stone house sits alone on an estuary that floods twice every day, cutting it off further from the rest of the world. Mrs. Drablow has died, and the only mourner at her funeral is a woman with a wasted, skeletal face, dressed all in black. Arthur crosses the estuary at low tide and enters the Drablow house -- thus begins a delightfully creepy and thoroughly satisfying old ghost story. ( )

Though short, this ghost story had enough horror to give me chills. (I don't see where the comparison to Jane Austen comes from- I see no resemblance.) ( )

I love this style of writing... very detailed and descriptive. Although some of our students have said that they had a hard time getting through the first few chapters, I was immediately captivated.

But gradually I discovered for myself the truth of the axiom that a man cannot remain indefinitely in a state of active terror. Either the emotion will increase until, at the prompting of more and more dreadful events and apprehensions, he is so overcome by it that he runs away or goes mad; or he will become by slow degrees less agitated and more in possession of himself.
A man may be accused of cowardice for fleeing away from all manner of physical dangers but when things supernatural, insubstantial and inexplicable threaten not only his safety and well-being but his sanity, his innermost soul, then retreat is not a sign of weakness but the most prudent course.
