Fantastic Mr. Fox von Roald Dahl (1970)

Das Dschungelbuch von Rudyard Kipling (themulhern)
themulhern: Kipling's animal stories are generally more sentimental and often more talky than "Fantastic Mr. Fox". Frequently, humans are very prominent and the animals are in a position of devoted servitude. But the short story "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" is quick moving and exciting, and the little mongoose who is the protagonist is a very independent character.… (mehr)

Read this on Audio. A classic, very short, children's novel (but I would really term it a novella) about Mr. Fox (who happens to be fantastic) sticks it to the man, 3 men actually, who are trying to kill him. After having just reread Danny Champion of the World, I can see that Dahl really likes it when the little guy gets one over on the the rich elite. Its a very cute story. If you haven't read it, do. I would also recommend the animated movie version that Wes Anderson did. Love that. A note about the narrator, it was actor Chris O'Dowd, who did an excellent job. I'm pretty sure he was channeling Matt Berry (his co-start on the IT Crowd) for the voice of Mr. Fox. Really well done, IMO. ( )

Roald Dahl himself reads the audio book version of this and he is (duh) fantastic. It's just an hour long unabridged, which was a perfect there-and-back commute length for me.

I love all of Roald Dahl's stories, especially for reluctant readers because they're so fun and a little edgy. Mr. Fox is no exception. It's a little shorter and little less inventive than some of his other books, but it's still great.

One small word of caution: if and when you share this with little ones, be prepared for them to ask you what "drunk" means. ( )

Mr Fox frequents the farms of Farmers Bean, Bunce and Boggis in order to feed his family. But the farmers have had enough and plan to dig the foxes out of their den. The fantastic Mr Fox comes up with a plan to dig deeper and further and when the farmers surround the hill - a plan to dig through to their farms in order to keep everyone fed.

This was an amusing little tale of the foxes, badgers, moles and weasels joining forces to outwit the farmers. The book promotes teamwork, loyalty and compassion for others. This was okay. I didn't love it but it wasn't totally ridiculous like some of Roald Dahl's books are. 3 stars for target audience, 2 stars for me. ( )

Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl (1970; 1988 ed.) 90 pages.

READING LEVEL: 4.1 AR POINTS 1.0
(4th grade…more or less)

A very cute, short and easy high-paced little read full of excitement that children will really enjoy. Although the animals steal, drink hard cider and prefer to stay hidden underground, that’s okay because they are underground animals and that’s just what they do to feed their families. It’s better than the three mean and nasty farmers: fat Boggis, squat Bunce and skinny Bean winning this war and killing all the underground animals. Kids will love that the animals win! ( )
