Short poems written in a variety of poetic styles depicting the seasons of a pond and the lives of plants and animals which inhabit it. On-page, non-fiction, interesting facts expand upon each topic of the poem. Beautifully illustrated. Recommend for classes studying wetlands and pond life as a supporting text.

This amazing collection of poetry and pond life combines poetry, more detailed prose information about the plants and animals, and beautiful artwork. ( )

This is a really cute book about different types of animals and creatures that live in a pond. Some of the poems are concrete throughout this book, but not all of them are. On each page, the creature that the poem is about is described. I enjoyed the factual information that was present in this book because it can be used in order to guide a science lesson. I also learned about different kinds of creatures by reading this book of poems. I think it is important to use factual poetry as well as fictional poetry in the classroom. ( )

Summary

This book is a collection of nonfiction poems about plants and animals that live in and around the pond. The poems give descriptions of these organisms, their food and some of their habitats. One particular poem even focuses on the food chain in a pond environment. Each poem is backed up by a paragraph additional, interesting facts about the organism that is the focus of the poem.

Critique

This book is a very creative way of presenting a combination of nonfiction and poetry to students. It can be used interchangeably in reading, writing or science and is a departure from what students might find to be monotonous. It focuses on well known creatures like ducks and frogs, as well as some plants and animals that many have never heard about or seen before, like a water bear. The information in the book is presented in a format that a teacher can use to hold the attention of students in many different ways.

Prompts

Pg.7 - What are some of the physical characteristics of the diving beetles that cause them to survive in their habitats? Why are they called water tigers?
Pg. 11-12 - Discuss the meaning of food chain. Discuss the pond food chain described in the poem, "In the Depths of the Summer Pond."
Pg. 24 - Why is the painted turtle saying, "Remember me. Remember." What was happening to the turtle in this particular season of the year?

Craft Elements

The writer used poetry to explore nonfiction. Have students take this further by doing creative performance with the poems. Students can creatively perform, "Diving Beetle's food-Sharing Rules" in any way they choose, they can create a tune for " Song of the Water Boatman" and students can act out "Into the Mud."
