Although she would later singlehandedly create a new approach to American cuisine with her cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking and her television show The French Chef, Julia Child was not always a master chef. Indeed, when she first arrived in France in 1948 with her husband, Paul, who was to work for the USIS, she spoke no French and knew nothing about the country itself.
But as she dove into French culture, buying food at local markets and taking classes at the Cordon Bleu, her life changed forever with her newfound passion for cooking and teaching. The book tells the story of Julia Child´s life. After the war she moved to Paris with her husband Paul, who was working in the US foreign service. The book tells us of a long passed Paris. But mainly it describes Julia Childs devotion to French cooking. Having found her mission quite late in life, she becomes a devoted cook. What I found most impressing: The ling long time she was working on her book, the simple trust that what she is doing is good, the devotion with which she writes recipe for recipe, year for year. Also I admire the inspiration Julia Child seems to have all her life.
In my opinion she can really be an ideal: She is no model at all, quite big and clumsy, but always confidet, because it are her good mood and energy that count. She sticks to her dream, she takes life, as it comes, she is affectionate, passionate, enjoys life and likes enjoment. These gifts are rare nowadays where noone dares to take a second helping of anything.
I really enjoyed this book, it is funny and inspiring. And also it is quite informative about the historical time where it is set, McCarthy and so on.
I also like the photographs. ( )

For me, reading Julia Child’s memoir felt like going home.

"My Life in France," written with Alex Prud'homme, is Child's exuberant, affectionate and boundlessly charming account of that transformation. It chronicles, in mouth-watering detail, the meals and the food markets that sparked her interest in French cooking, and her growing appreciation of all things French."

This is a book about some of the things I have loved most in life; my husband, Paul Child; la belle France; and the many pleasures of cooking and eating.

Usually one's cooking is better than one thinks it is. And if the food is truly vile, as my ersatz eggs Florentine surely were, then the cook must simply grit her teeth and bear it with a smile - and learn from her mistakes.
