While this book contains generally interesting historical narratives, its true worth is as a reference work. The maps alone are worth the price of the book. They are invaluable when making a study of any ancient Greek work.

The content of this historical atlas encompasses the earliest known times of Grecian history, to the point where the Greece was subsumed into the Roman Empire. The historical content is limited on any given topic, and contains minor factual and typographical errors, but these are not major detractors from the overall worth of the book as a reference.

One note about the atlas regards its choice for Greek transliteration. The transliteration style is one I’ve not seen elsewhere in large quantity. I assume it is either an archaic form, or perhaps a form suited for British English. The three major differences are as follows. First, the use of the letter K rather than C for hard C sounds, e.g. Sokrates rather than Socrates. The second shift is to use the –os, rather than –us for the Greek –ος, e.g. Ephesos rather than Ephesus. The last change is to use –ai- for the Geek diphthong αι rather than the more traditional –ae- or Latin ligature æ e.g. Cydathenaion rather than Cydathenaeon or Cydathenæon. ( )
