Mr. and Mrs. North attempt to solve the case of a New Year's Eve murder Freddie Haven has just crossed the Brooklyn Bridge when she sees a man she believes to be her fiancé, Sen. Bruce Kirkhill, on the sidewalk, walking alone through one of Manhattan's vilest slums. It seems impossible that the shabby figure is actually Bruce, and Freddie tries to put the sight out of her mind. She prepares herself for her father's New Year's Eve party, and waits for her husband-to-be to arrive. But the senator never shows. Bruce is found dead in a doorway not far from the Bowery. What was he doing in the wrong part of town, and why was he dressed in a bum's shabby suit? Freddie begs for help from Mr. and Mrs. North, amateur sleuths who catch killers between sipping martinis. But is she ready to discover that the senator had a secret the shadows of the Bowery weren't dark enough to hide? The Dishonest Murderer is the 13th book in the Mr. and Mrs. North Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.… (mehr)

Review: The Dishonest murderer by Frances & Richard Lockridge.

This is a mystery in an old series, where I got it, I don’t know but it reminded me of the Agatha Christie mysteries. There is a lot of difference in reading an old mystery then the mysteries written today. I enjoyed the story and style of writing of long ago.

The characters are well developed, and the story is well organized. The book holds the readers interest, was easy to follow and kept a strong hold on the mystery aspect of the story.

The Vice-Admiral Satterbee is giving a party for the announcement of his daughter, Freddie’s and her fiancé, Bruce Kirkhill’s up-coming wedding. The Admiral was not pleased with the choice of character his daughter has chosen but for her benefit at the party he greeted people at the door with a smile. Two months prior he hired a slimy investigator to check on Bruce’s background but for some reason that very day he eliminated the conquest of the investigation. The slimy investigator was not happy…..

Throughout the evening people arrived in interludes and talked hush-hush, gossiped and never led on they noticed the fiancée didn’t make an appearance. Freddie just figured he got held up and would come through the door any moment. It was a long evening for some as others went home because of the late hour. The party dwindled down to a few who were concern for Bruce Kirkhill. Plus, there was a mystery floating within the group that Freddie thought she seen Bruce earlier in the day in a cheap neighborhood, wearing shabby clothes. However, she stated later that it couldn’t be Bruce and she had been mistaken.

Someone is murdered on New Years Eve…. Could it be Bruce Kirkhill or was it Smiley, the slimy investigator…..
