"Nanta's Lion" is a book about a girl who lives in a Maasai village in Africa who goes looking for the lion that has been stealing her village's cattle. Throughout the book, we watch her travel all the way to the neighboring village where sees many different animals but no lion. The book is very interactive and the pages are cut in an interesting way to reveal hidden images. Although I didn't notice it until the very last page, the picture of the lion begins to form just after the center spread. This is a very fun book that children will love and will also help them learn a little about another culture in Africa. ( ) I liked this book because it was very interactive. I think that this is a great book for children because it will keep them involved in the book, if someone is reading to them. I liked how the different pages turned into a lion at the end of the book. I think that children would really like that part as well. This is another culturally diverse book; Nanta is a an African girl who lives in the Maasai village. She is looking forward to helping the men,by herself, to scavenge and hunt for the disturbing lion who is stealing their cattle. Nanta then gets thirsty from her quest only to be sitting unknowingly by a lion whose resting just like her. It is a good adventure story that lets readers discover the lifestyle of these African villagers through Nanta's quest. The reader learns about the Maasai huts, the daily lives of the villagers as well as the farm life of these Masai people. This is a K-3 reading level book. Genre: Realistic Fiction Critique of Genre: This is a good example of realistic fiction because it tells the story of a Maasai girl who went looking for a lion on the African plains. Nanta’s search for a lion is something that could actually happen in Africa, thus the book is realistic.
