Ma gli esordi letterari di Stout s'erano svolti all'insegna della sperimentazione con il romanzo Due rampe per l'abisso (1929), lodato come 'impresa tecnica molto interessante' da Joseph Warren Beach in Tecnica del romanzo novecentesco. Convertitosi al giallo e ai quattrini, Stout non ha mai rinunciato alle ambizioni narrative, spesso appena celate dietro il tono leggero della parodia.
