This book could help students learn about biological differences between related organisms and assist with science topics or lectures. This book defines amphibians, discusses the differences between frogs and toads, distinguishes between different types of frogs, identifies frogs by their different environments, appearances, vocalizations, life stages, and behaviors, and discusses frog anatomy and locomotion. The book also discusses environmental dangers to frogs, such as water pollution and loss of wetlands. In this regard, it carries a strong conservation message. The acrylic paintings are illustrated on acid-free watercolor paper, and all are phenomenal, captivating, and strikingly accurate. This book is truly all about frogs and gave me more information about them than I ever thought possible! It begins by showing the difference and discussing characteristics between a frog and a toad, touching on the sizes, different ways the two frogs leap and informing me about the different locations the two can be found. This book shows us that the different markings on frogs can help us figure out where they live and where they can be found. This book also has detailed images that point out the features of frogs and how they help, such as webbed toes or how the tongue can reach so far. It uses more scientific terms than other informational children's books, showing the inner eyelid and giving the official name of, nictitating membrane. I liked the portion that shows how the frogs create their well-known noises which kids could easily discuss. Overall I really liked this book and added it to my wishlist on Amazon. Arnosky's book lends itself easily to any classroom unit studying animals, habitat, life cycle even a spring time unit could be tied in. The illustrations grab the reader with the bold, bright color choices and detailed illustrations. Readers are well informed throughout the book on what prey the frogs eat as well as what animals are natural predators of frogs. The accompanying illustrations on the life cycle of frogs is illuminating and the presentation of information is easy to read and laid out in a lighthearted way with frogs peering out at you in close up illustrations on different pages. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

Pairing an informative and engaging text with gorgeously colorful illustrations done in acrylic paint, All About Frogs is a worthy addition to this series, and is sure to please young children who are interested in this amphibian life form. I learned a few new things myself - I didn't realize that only male frogs made sounds, in order to attract the females - and I revisited other topics, such as metamorphosis, that I found particularly fascinating as a youngster. My only critique of the book, and it is one that I have with all of the titles in this series, is that there is no list of sources, or of further reading ideas. Leaving that aside, this is one I would recommend to all young animal lovers, and to anyone seeking quality works of natural history for the picture-book set. ( )
