Introduzione. Questo libro si propone di tracciare, in primo luogo, un quadro della concezione del mondo dell'esoterismo occidentale: un quadro che riesca a esprimere e analizzare cosa la filosofia perenne rappresenti per l'esoterismo, privilegiando gli aspetti psicospirituali e cosmologici e rinviando la trattazione della componente sociale, politica e culturale a futuri lavori. Davanti alle accuse di sincretismo, chi scrive riconosce la propria colpevolezza, ma spera che questo quadro goda del consenso dei praticanti. Il secondo scopo del libro è illustrare i moderni insegnamenti teosofici, in particolare per quanto riguarda la scienza iniziatica, argomento che fino a oggi non è stato adeguatamente compreso o almeno scandagliato in profondità.
