Bulgaria has had three periods as an independent power centre and this is about the first. It figures as a foil to the better organized Byzantines, but this state was a pretty good place to live in the darkest of the dark ages.
Relatively rare material is explored here, but this book did mark its author as a lively writer. He did continue in the area and both Crusading, and Byzantine studies do not begrudge the man his knighthood. ( )
