The adventurous, insightful, and often chilling story of a young geographer's road trip through the underworld of U.S. military and CIA "black ops" sites. Geographer-artist Trevor Paglen's research into areas that officially "don't exist" leads him on a globe-trotting adventure into a vast, undemocratic, and uncontrolled black empire--the unmarked spots on a map where our military conducts its most clandestine operations. Run by an amorphous group of government agencies and private companies, this empire's annual budget is over $40 billion, yet almost no one knows how it works or what it does. Whether it's from a hotel room in Vegas, secret prisons in Kabul, buried CIA aircraft in Central American jungles, Washington suburbs, or a trailer in Shoshone Indian territory, Paglen's reporting is impassioned, rigorous, relentless, and eye-opening. This is an exposé of a world that, officially, isn't even there.--From publisher description.… (mehr)

I've been completely spoiled by [a:Gordon Thomas|48435|Gordon Thomas|http://www.goodreads.com/images/nophoto/nophoto-U-50x66.jpg]. His books ("Journey into Madness: The Story of Secret CIA Mind Control and Medical Abuse"; "Secret Wars: One Hundred Years of British Intelligence Inside MI-5 and MI-6"; and "Gideon's Spies: The Secret History of Mossad") that I've read are all much more meticulously researched and cited than this one.

To me, unless you're a conspiracy theory nut, you need to cite your sources. Every single fact that makes you raise your eyebrows needs SOMETHING akin to documentation. There are a list of sources at the end of the book, but there are no corresponding numbers in at the end of the proper sentences, etc.

This book IS interesting and the writing is okay. So I guess my problem is with the structure of the book. If you want to learn more about governmental secrets and black programs, I'd recommend one of Gordon Thomas' books instead. ( )

I had no idea the breadth of the black world. The American espionage complex employs 4 million people. The budgets involved are enormous and what the funds go to is at best unclear. Unfortunately, but for obvious reasons, the book was unable to give much information on the various black ops areas run by the US government. The author mostly focuses on the corrosive effect the black ops world has on American democracy. I wish this were required reading for American voters. ( )
