With 3/4-page illustrations and a short paragraph of text along the bottom of each page, Gibbons gives the history of horses, different breeds, and gaits; pays special attention to the hooves and teeth; gives information on horses in the wild as well as domesticated horses, and their growth, and different kinds of competitions (though the Olympics are not mentioned). A good, thorough introduction. ( )

Horses! by Gail Gibbons is an instructional picture book about the science, evolutionary history, and domesticative culture of horses. The book gives a detailed account of horse behavior, types of horses, and historical uses of the animal. The only issue is the book is that it is rather cluttered with information, so it would probably not be appropriate for the attention span of a child below, say, age 9. The positive side is that it focuses on a wide range of instructional topics about the animal including anatomy, behavior, and upkeep. ( )
