Crogan's Vengeance is simply one of the best swashbuckling fictions I've ever read. Don't be fooled by its comic book format. This book is a great balance of exciting conflict, and rather sophisticated moral dilemma. If you've read Sabatini, Forester, O'Brien or Perez-Reverte, you'll appreciate the great skill it takes to write something that is simultaneously thrilling and philosophically subtle. "'Catfoot' Crogan is an able-bodied mariner plying his trade for a dastardly 'legitimate' captain with a grudge against Crogan for a slight committed well before he was born. But when his ship is taken by pirates, will Crogan stay loyal to his law-abiding, if despicable, captain or will he find a new life on the high seas living by the 'Pirate's Code'"?--From the publisher. The Crogan family has a list of ancestors that have lived anything but quiet, peaceful lives. And Dr. Crogan draws on their stories to use as lessons for his boys. On one particular day Eric, the older son, gets in trouble with a certain Mrs. Munger, but only because he was trying to make right a wrong done by another. He's the one that gets the blame though and a lecture. To help Eric understand the whole scenario of "moral uncertainty" where one is forced to make a choice between two things (like pride and honor), he tells the story of their ancestor the famed pirate Catfoot Crogan.
Catfoot was a honest sailor; he was only on the wrong side of the captain due to his family history. But the sailor was a good man with morals. However, being in a ship with small rations and a crazy captain who hates the sound of any type of mutiny is not good for one's soul. So when the ship is about to be attacked by pirates, he and the rest of the crew agree to join the pirates.
To the generation of Pirates of the Caribbean, Catfoot can be described as a saner, younger version of Jack Sparrow, if you minus the latter's dabblings in the supernatural. He is the strategist and always has a plan up his "sleeve". The book is a fun read and shows you not only how he becomes a pirate, but also how he becomes the captain.
