( ) It should be mentioned first that Bellairs has a distinctive, one might say unmistakable, style, which by no means everyone will like. He also likes to concentrate on characters who are down-at-heel, seedy or eccentric. For example, this book features a disreputable bookseller, a pompous schoolmaster and his distinctly deranged sister, a solicitor who moonlights as a theatre critic, and a sexton obsessed with the folly-garden he's created. The case itself starts with the accidental death of a defaulting bank employee, which leads to the discovery of a fraud perpetrated by someone else, and also of more than one murder. Part of the book is set on the Isle of Man, which Bellairs particularly liked as a mise-en-scene (he lived there himself after retiring from his day job as a bank manager). If you've not encountered this author before this book would be a good one to see if you like his style. This is quite a convoluted case for Inspector Littlejohn, and the one in which he comes across, perhaps the most cold-blooded and evil murderers of his whole career. During the book we are faced with not only several murders, but also forgery, embezzlement and disappearances too. This particular book is noteworthy, because in the course of the story,Littlejohn first meets ,the Reverend Caesar Kinrade, from the Isle of Man,who becomes in many of the later stories, his great friend and helper in his investigations. A perfectly plotted crime is foiled by a runaway bank clerk as Inspector Littlejohn navigates impersonation, forgery, embezzlement . . . and a murder. It was meant to be a fool-proof scheme. The victim was a recluse, cut off from the world after the death of his wife. Nobody would think it strange when they didn't see him. Nobody would make inquiries. Yet even the most meticulous of criminals can be caught out, especially if they don't leave room for human error. Littlejohn and Cromwell find themselves with more than one mystery to unravel-but will they be able to find the elusive killer? About Inspector Littlejohn Inspector Thomas Littlejohn of Scotland Yard is a shrewd yet courteous sleuth who splits his time between quaint English villages, the scenic Isle of Man, and French Provinces. With a sharp tongue and a dry sense of humor, Littlejohn approaches his work with poise and confidence, shifting through red-herrings and solving even the most perplexing of cases.
