Sometimes when you read a book you come across one that changes the way you see life. In this case, Elsewhere changed my way of seeing death. When I picked up this book I was expecting a light tale of a girl that found herself 'alive' after dying at 15-years-old. But by the end (the ending is amazing and my favorite part) I saw that Gabrielle Zevin had done a wonderful work sending all the right messages about life, dealing with death, love and friendship. Having read her other novel 'Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac' I knew I wouldn't be let down and this book confirms what an excellent author Zevin is. I definitely want to read more of her work.

“But I believe good things happen everyday. I believe good things happen even when bad things happen. And I believe on a happy day like today, we can still feel a little sad. And that's life, isn't it?”

“A life isn't measured in hours and minutes. It's the quality, not the length.” ( )

I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. Unfortunately, there is still always a risk of slight spoilers despite my best efforts. If you feel something in my review is a spoiler please let me know. Thank you.

Liz is dead. She was hit by a car and died. Now she's in elsewhere, a place where she grows younger not older, till she is young enough to be sent back to earth and reborn. But Liz is only 15 years old, and it took her 'so long' to get there. She doesn't want to back. Her life is over, and she spirals into depression. What is the point in having a job, a family, falling in love, when everything ends and she must begin life on earth all over again?

So this was a good read. Very interesting and kinda different. Fun and yet sad at the same time. I feel the best thing I can take from this is too make the best out of what you have instead of dwelling on things you can't change. To always look forward, even if you feel like you are going backwards. It's well worth the read. I recommend it. ( )

Kudos to Gabrielle Zevin for an imaginative novel about the afterlife where the dead get progressively younger until they are reborn as infants. Narrated by 16 year old Liz Hall, killed in a hit-and-run accident, she wakes on a cruise ship ferrying the deceased to Elsewhere. Like others, she has a hard time adjusting to her "new reality", drawn to watch the living via binoculars, eventually breaking rules to contact them. In the process, she finally connects with someone in the afterlife. Generally, Zevin's characters were interesting although the dialogue was too similar across ages, genders, cultures, animals. Zevin also deals with big issues (love, death, friendship, responsibilities) seamlessly in the context of her story. 3.5 stars, and I will read another of her books.

I was surprised I didn't like this book as I've enjoyed Zevin's other books immensely but I really, really disliked the main character so much that I couldn't finish. ( )

Teen fiction; afterlife romance. I thought I wasn't going to like this book (the first chapter is written from the perspective of the family dog, which seems unwarranted until you learn about Liz's avocation as a dog therapist in Elsewhere) but as the story progressed, I got attached to Liz and Betty and Owen. I skimmed over the ending, but it was pretty satisfactory. ( )

The end came quickly, and there wasn't any pain.

Liz considers what the strange little boy has said. As much as she longs to be with her family and her friends, she doesn't want to be a ghost. She certainly doesn't want to cause more pain to the people she loves. She knows there is only one thing to do.
