I loved this book because it is written and illustrated in a way that allows for its main idea of to be easily pictured and understood. The main idea is that all different kinds of people can end up becoming good friends! I liked the plot and that it offered a conflict and surprise ending. In the beginning of the story, Cow, Pig, and Chicken do not like Dog because he drools on them and annoys them. By the end of the book, Dog has done them a favor by creating a door for their toy barn so that they can enter and exit as they please. I liked that Cow, Pig, and Chicken learned how to see Dog in a new way and become his friends. I also liked how the illustrations helped depict these aspects of the book. For example, one can picture why Cow, Pig, and Chicken were annoyed with Dog with the image of his slobber slowly dripping onto them! One can also see how their friendship has grown at the end of the book when he or she views the illustration of the four of them laying together appearing to take a nap. In addition, I appreciated the descriptive wording. If the reader needed any other reason to understand why the animals were a bit intimidated by dog, the illustration of a nervous Cow accompanied by her thoughts written as that she “heard a sound, a drooly, snorty, kind of sound” do the trick! I love how uniquely written that line, among others, was written and the fun nature that the book gives off! ( ) I found this book very charming and absolutely hilarious. It is action-packed from beginning to end and can be read very enthusiastically to keep children entertained. It is also a great book to do follow-up activities with. A website called “My Favourite Books” ( http://myfavouritebooks.blogspot.com/2009/09/chicken-pig-cow-by-ruth-ohi-or-cute... ) showcases the book as one of their all-time favourites. They give a short review of the book on the site and highly recommend it! The book also brings up some social responsibility issues like inclusion and sharing that could be further discussed.
