I liked this book because of the organization, the writing, and the photographs used. I like how the book is organized as each set of pages, on both sides of the spine, are dedicated to one question. This allows readers to get a full grasp of the concept and are able to learn a lot of different information that is clearly divided. I also like how each page has subsections of additional questions that relate to the big question. For example, on the "Why is the sun hot page?", there are other questions like "Why can't I look at the sun?" and "Why does it feel cold when a cloud covers the sun?". In addition, I like the writing in the book and how it is at an appropriate level for the age range the book targets. The questions asked are all common things children wonder about, and are questions many children might have asked before or things that people think about but might not know the full answer to. For example, the book covers topics like "why do rainbows appear" and "why does it snow". By having topics that kids can relate to, the book can keep readers attention better by making the information relevant to the child's life. The book uses vocabulary that is child-friendly and also includes other phrases or sayings that kids could find funny, like "hot stuff!". By having the text be set at the appropriate level, students can feel like they are learning important information that isn't too hard or too childish for them. In addition, I like the photographs the author uses as they help readers be able to see examples of the topic the information is about, especially since some readers might not have seen examples of it before. For example, when children think about wind, some might not think about tornadoes if they do not live in an area where they are present. The picture of the tornado on the wind page helps readers to be able to see a wider variety of the types of wind that exist. The big idea of the book is for students to learn about common weather phenomena and how there is a scientific explanation and reasoning behind all of it. ( )

Explains why lightning happens. A great book to have for the children to look at on their own.

WHY does lightning strike? Questions children ask about WEATHER , a DK Publishing Book by Terry Marin, is a survey book about weather. Included in this book are answers to questions about the sun’s heat, what makes rainbows, why it rains, why wind blows, why it snows, why ice is slippery, why dew drops form, and why lightning strikes. Color photographs of weather scenes as well as people, animals and nature in them appear on every page. The questions and explanations are very general making it a good introduction to why there are different types of weather. ( )
