For all grades, students could write a letter to the school board persuading them to use mroe eco-friendly fuel in school buses. The students would incorporate the information they learned from the book while also sttaing and supporting their opinion. These letters would truly be sent to the board, not only being a lesson on persuasive writing, but that they can make a difference in their community and that they have a voice. Students 1 to 3 could collect water bottles, which contain petroleum, and use them to create a class art project instead of throwing them away to show that items like these can be reused for numerous purposes. Studenyts in fourth and fifth grade could do a research project where they looked up how pollution has affected the area they live in or another area in the world and propose a solution for it.

This book would be good to use as a class book for 4th grade because they are learning about the carbon cycle. It would be used as a class book because the pictures are very detailed and all students may not be able to see them if it was an interactive read aloud.

I would use this text as an interactive read aloud in a fourth grade classroom. Students at this age are interested in the environment and are learning about energy sources. This text shows how gases are used, and students at this age are also learning about the carbon cycle. I would use this text to have students make a compare and contrast chart about firsthand and second hand accounts. I would use this text to make these charts because students are able to look at earth before fossil fuels, such as in real life photographs or another informational text (first hand), and then see how fossil fuels have impacted the earth overtime, such as in real life photos (second hand). After reading the text, I would have students to do a quick write and make suggestions about how to stop burning fossil fuels and use alternative fuel options based on the examples in the text. We would then discuss them out loud in class. ( )

Non-fiction book that simplifies oil in terms of how we use it in our daily lives and how it is damaging to the environment. This book also gives great alternatives. ( )

I would use this book in a second or third grade science classroom where they are learning about solids, liquids, and gases. This would be a perfect book to tie in gas and the different types of gases. This would also be good to show the uses of gases. ( )
