She had bewitched the most serious, snobbish, and handsome Duke in England. Joyous MacQuarrie...the pixie-like, green-eyed beauty had appeared from nowhere and fell unashamedly into his arms. And all that his society friends knew of the mysterious lady was that she was Scottish and that her grandmother had been a Locksley. Even her fine bloodline didn't make Joy quite proper enough to be a Duchess, but a proud nobleman like Alec, Duke of Belmore, did as he pleased...and he wanted to marry the beautiful girl who aroused his desire. But Alec soon discovered he could not do what he pleased with Joy Fiona MacQuarrie. Bubbling with laughter, filled with spirit, she turned stately Belmore Park upside down with merriment and strange occurrences. She might even have gotten Alec to laugh -- and to cherish her -- if it had not been for the truth she hid. Though he turned to fire when he tasted her petal-soft lips, he turned to ice when he discovered that this winsome lady was, in fact, a witch. A witch whose powers of white magic were not always perfectly under control....Too late, Joy knew she was desperately in love and that nothing could stop the course of their destiny -- the scandal threatening to destroy her and the passion that held them both spellbound in a forbidden, irresistible match of two enchanted hearts.… (mehr)

Disappointed with this one recommended by SEP as one of her personal favorites. Scottish witch falls for cold English duke who rejects her magic. Her magic is unreliable and wreaks havoc and is supposed to be funny, I guess, but didn’t impress me much. Ho-hum. ( )

The heroine has always been a klutz- a failure-someone who can't control her magic and makes trouble for those around her. But she is kind and joyous-as her name declares-and has the gift of always seeing the bright side of life. She's granted freedom to travel to England on her own for the first time and she doesn't want to do anything to muck it up. But, as if typical, she incorrectly chants a spell and finds herself lost in the woods and sitting on top a fine clothed Duke with the scowl of the century. The hero has hired someone to find him the perfect wife and he indeed has found her. Beautiful, good breeding and a grace-he has asked her to marry him. Then, much to his astonishment she cries off and marries another- a sailor for gods sake. In his embarrassment and amidst his hurt pride, he finds himself in the presence of a woman who fits 2 of the 3 requirements of what he sees in his wife. She is beautiful and attractive-which is plain to see has he can barely keep his hands to himself. She is the granddaughter of an earl and has the blood of a lady. But she is horribly inept when it comes to social decorum. But regardless he asks her to marry him and she accepts. The heroine can see a glimmer of something deep inside him-something hidden well behind his mask of ice and coldness. He never smiles, he has no sense od humor and he is so entirely wrapped up in the role of being a Duke that he has no idea how to actually be a person. But regardless of her husbands stern demeanor and harsh reprimands, the heroine is determined to help him find the magic in life. When she informs him that she is a witch, he is horrified and angry with the idea that she should ever embarrass him in society and demands that she never use magic again. Of course, she wants to be the best duchess she can be and though she is lacking in training, she wants to please her husband. This however doesn't stop her from casting the odd spell here and there-must to the hero's displeasure and frustration when said spell often goes array. There are times and moments in the hero and heroine interaction when she starts to chip away at the ice around the hero's heart but something-mostly his pride- always manages to ruin any progress she's ever made. He stubborn refuses to believe that life can be more than being a Duke, that his title is all he can ever be and love or anything silly like that has no place in his life. This hurts the heroine, that and the harsh words he says when he's either angry at her or when he realizes how close she's coming to getting under his skin. Regardless of this tug of war, they make up afterwards in one fashion or another and it's his relationship with his wife that opens him to having a relationship with his brother. But when old fears come rushing back and hero makes an ass of himself once again, he must admit the truth to himself of lose her forever. This book had an abundance of charm and humor but it was also heartbreaking and super sad. The heroine was go good. All she wants was to help the hero, the man she's in love with. She tries to be what he wants her to be but at the core of her she's a witch-even a less than remarkable one-and she can't change who she is. You truly feel for her every time the hero dashes her happiness or steps on her heart. The hero was so damn frustrating but you could see a layer being peeled away every day that goes by-revealing the man he's meant to be. I also liked that even he's not aware of his feelings for the heroine and denies them adamantly but his love shines through every time he calls her Scottish. Over all I loved this book and found it be enchanting. ( )

Funny, cute and enjoyable despite the fact that I have recently grown a little tired of all these male characters who just don't know "what love is and how to love" because of their cold and mean mommy or daddy. 3 1/2 stars, almost 4. Warm humour was the best part of the book. ( )
