Sophie Beckett never dreamed she'd be able to sneak into Lady Bridgerton's famed masquerade ball—or that "Prince Charming" would be waiting there for her! Though the daughter of an earl, Sophie has been relegated to the role of servant by her disdainful stepmother. But now, spinning in the strong arms of the debonair and devastatingly handsome Benedict Bridgerton, she feels like royalty. Alas, she knows all enchantments must end when the clock strikes midnight. Who was that extraordinary woman? Ever since that magical night, a radiant vision in silver has blinded Benedict to the attractions of any other—except, perhaps, this alluring and oddly familiar beauty dressed in housemaid's garb whom he feels compelled to rescue from a most disagreeable situation. He has sworn to find and wed his mystery miss, but this breathtaking maid makes him weak with wanting her. Yet, if he offers her his heart, will Benedict sacrifice his only chance for a fairy tale love?… (mehr)

A wonderful entry in the Bridgertons series. Honestly some of these books are not fantastic -- I loved the Netflix version of The Duke and I (first season of Bridgertons) but did not love that book. Some of the books are a ton of fun though, and this one absolutely worked for me. I loved Sophie and Benedict both. A lot of the complaints in other comments about Benedict being imperious struck me as silly. Of course he is imperious, he has never not gotten what he wanted. He does though learn to understand his privilege and to see others' experiences are different. He knows he was an ass, and he changes. Its sweet. The second epilogue was a bit of a bore, but the book itself was fun and exciting and dreamy. I did the audiobook and it was for me a great way to wind down and fall asleep at the end of some stressful days. ( )

Benedict and Sophie's story is a Cinderella retelling. The two meet at a masquerade ball from which Sophie escapes without Benedict learning her identity. He looks for her for quite some time and both long for each other. Two years later they meet again by chance and the chemistry is still there even though he doesn't know Sophie is more than just a servant but is his lady in silver. I liked this one. It read easily and I love learning more about the Bridgerton family. I was annoyed at times by Benedict's attitude, but was happy he finally saw how wrong he was and that he understood Sophie's motivations in the end. I will continue with the series. ( )

This is quite a good Cinderella retelling. Starring Benedict Bridgerton and Sophie Beckett. She is the illegitimate daughter who is mistreated by the woman her father marries who gets an opportunity to attend a masquerade ball with the help of the other servants in the house. There she meets Benedict and the attraction is immediate but she has a timetable to leave. Her stepmother's reaction leads to her leaving and discovering that her life will be constrained by he illegitimacy and the fact that she has no background to speak of.
Benedict is at a party he isn't enjoying, he decides to leave and on his way out he discovers Sophie being attacked by the son of the house. Sophie finds herself being rescued by Benedict and they retreat to his country house. They get caught in a storm and he becomes ill. The relationship develops but all he's initially offering is that she would become his mistress but she doesn't want that.

There are some moments of dubious consent but overall it's a powerful retelling of Cinderella. ( )
