In Dragon's Kin, bestselling author Anne McCaffrey did the unthinkable: for the first time ever, she invited another writer to join her in the skies of her most famous fictional creation. That writer was her son, Todd McCaffrey. Together, they penned a triumphant new chapter in the annals of the extraordinarily popular Dragonriders of Pern. Now, for the first time, Todd McCaffrey flies alone. And Dragonsblood is proof that the future of Pern is in good hands. After all, dragons are in his blood... Never in the dramatic history of Pern has there been a more dire emergency than that which faces the young dragonrider Lorana. A mysterious fatal illness is striking dragons. The epidemic is spreading like wildfire . . . and the next deadly cycle of Threadfall is only days away. Somehow, Lorana must find a cure before the dragons - including her own beloved Arith - succumb to the sickness, leaving Pern undefended. The lyrics of an all-but-forgotten song seem to point toward an answer, an answer from nearly five hundred years in the past, when Kitti Ping and her daughter Wind Blossom bred the first dragons from their smaller cousins, the fire-lizards. No doubt the first Pern colonists possessed the advanced technology to find the cure Lorana seeks, but over the centuries, that knowledge has been lost. Or has it? For in the distant past, an aged Wind Blossom worries that the germs that affect the fire-lizards may one day turn against larger prey - and unleash a plague that will destroy the dragons, Pern's only defenders against Thread. But as her people struggle to survive, Wind Blossom has neither the time nor the resources to expend on a future that may never arrive - until suddenly she uncovers evidence that her worst fears will come true. Now two brave women, separated by hundreds of years but joined by bonds transcending time, will become unknowing allies in a desperate race against sickness and Threadfall, with nothing less than the survival of all life on Pern at stake. "The torch has been passed and burns more brightly than ever in this latest chapter of the venerable Pern saga, the first of what one hopes will be many solo efforts by the son of series creator Anne McCaffrey." - Publishers Weekly (starred review)… (mehr)

I'm trying to read the Pern series in chronological order.
So, I've read Dragonsdawn, first chronicles and 2nd chronicles,
then Todd's contributions of Dragon's kin, Dragon's fire, Dragonharper and now Dragon's blood.

Todd's books are gradually getting better. The first two had such jumps in the continuity of the storyline I had to check there weren't missing pages.
I have quite enjoyed DragonHarper and now Dragon's blood.

And yes, plagues are getting overdone as a storyline and there are too many characters that are too similar to remember which is which, but basically, I enjoyed it.

Onto Dragon's Heart ( )

Anne McCaffrey is the quintessential writer of fantasy books pertaining to dragons. These books are always wonderful, well written, and perfectly characterized. All of her series are great but the ones that take place on Pern are the best of all. ( )

I finally understood by the end of the book but jumping back and forth was giving me whiplash. Todd carries on his mother's tale-spinning talent in this 18th book in the Pern World. I have read some other reviews that were critical in some details, but I think Todd did a good job with this one. ( )

A mysterious epidemic is striking dragons, and the next deadly cycle of Threadfall is only days away. Somehow, dragonrider Lorana must find a way to save all the dragons—including her own beloved Arith—before they succumb to the sickness, leaving Pern undefended. No doubt the first colonists, who originally bred the dragons, possessed the advanced technology to find a cure. But over the centuries, that knowledge was lost.

Five hundred years in the past, a scientist foresees that a disease may ultimately destroy the dragons, and she is determined to find a way to change the future. Now two brave women, separated by hundreds of years but joined by bonds transcending time, become unknowing allies in a desperate race for nothing less than Pern’s survival. ( )

The overall story is a good one, and feels particularly au courant because it focuses on an epidemic. Overall, I liked it.

It is a difficult book to read, however. There are two parallel stories, generally told in alternate chapters, and there are A Lot of characters, many with similar names: M'tal and M'hall were particularly confusing for me.
The A story takes place in the Third Pass, with Thread falling while an epidemic rages among fire lizards and dragons causing many of them to get sick and die. This is the immediate problem that the book seeks to solve.

I recognized Kindan the Harper from the previous books I'd read set in this time. I liked the main protagonist Lorana. I even figured out what burr was under Weyrwoman Tullea's saddle before that was revealed. The main characters are fine. The intermediate characters, well, I was never sure who they were relative to the main characters.

The B story takes place about 400 years earlier, before all technology from the spacefarers was lost. It is clearly a distinct culture from the more familiar A story, but one can see how it could move to the later culture.

Despite the difficulty in keeping everyone straight, the book felt like it was a seamless part of the Pern world. ( )
