Turning twenty-seven may be terrifying for some, but for Alex, a struggling artist living in the midwestern United States, it is cataclysmic. Inheriting a huge expanse of land should have made him a rich and happy man; but something about this birthday, his name, and the beautiful woman whose life he just saved, has suddenly made him--and everyone he loves--into a target--target for extreme and uncompromising violence.… (mehr)

(2009)Advertised as a different genre for this author, it really isn't. Instead of being set in a land that magic is a way of life in, it is set in the ?real? world of the 21st century. Alex Rahl meets a mysterious woman named Jax and discovers that he is the center of a conflict between the ?magic? world and his world. She can't use magic in the ?real? world but is sent to Alex to help him defend her world from really bad people. He is a descendant of the Rahl's of the magic world, and coincidence (don't think so) that is the name of the villain of his Sword of Truth fantasy series. The closer the book got to the ending, the more it became what Goodkind is known for, a fantasy. Still a very good and quick read for a 500 page novel. Liked it, and will probably continue reading if (Ha!) this turns into a series.(PW) Goodkind (Confessor) ventures into thriller territory with results sure to please fans of his fantasy fiction. In the opening pages, Alex Rahl, the book's unwitting hero, saves the beautiful Jax from being run down on the street in Orden, Neb., by a plumbing truck flying a pirate flag. Jax, who turns out to be from an alternate reality where evildoers are attempting to seize control of her civilization, has traveled to Nebraska to seek Alex's help in saving her people. In Jax's world, magic takes the place of technology, but on earth she's stripped of her powers and forced to fight armed with only her trusty dagger. The author takes his time setting all this up, but once the story gets rolling, it's a gripping ride as the bad guys whoosh in between their world, which remains unseen, and ours. Fantasy and thriller readers alike will find themselves swept along to the final confrontation and looking forward to the next installment.

Het viel me echt tegen.

Another really thick book from Terry Goodkind. I was intrigued by the inner cover. It was slower in parts, he took more time explaining the connections but other than that it was intriguing. If you are looking for something different from Terry, this might not be it! Some predictable twists, especially if his other books have been read. ( )

Kind of a spin-off from the Sword Of Truth series. Wasn't too bad although the fight scenes were a little drawn out and simplistic. Have to see if he takes this anywhere. ( )

Prolific bestselling novelist Terry Goodkind’s new book, The Law of Nines, takes several half-hearted swipes at moving his franchise from the sub-genre of bland, derivative fantasy to the far more lucrative sub-genre of bland, derivative contemporary thrillers, and the results will of course please his long-time fans (who come, one suspects, pre-pleased) – and irritate and bore the spit out of everybody else.

Despite the rollicking plot, Goodkind just doesn't seem nearly as comfortable in the straight-thriller vein as he does with fantasy. That changes during the final scenes, when he returns to what he knows best and starts to dish up more meaty fantasy. His writing becomes nimble, clear, dimensional.

THE LAW OF NINES is not nearly as intriguing or as captivating as The Sword of Truth, yet for a work that seeks to step away from a 15-year legacy, even if not a full separation, it serves to give Goodkind that room to stretch. It is an adventure tale that could either end with just this outing or continue on in further installments. Either way, it is a new mark on the Goodkind resume that readers can enjoy.

To Jeri, the love of my life, who is always there for me. She gives me strength when I'm weak and her special smile when I'm strong. No one knows as well as she everything that has brought me to this place, the book, this new road. I could never be who I am, or accomplish all that I do, without her at my side every step of the way. She completes me. This one is for her.
