He and others of his company developed a "roadometer," or odometer, which counted the revolutions of the wagon wheels, and thus enabled them to calculate fairly exact mileages along their route. Clayton recorded these with pertinent notes about the geography and resources of the land along the "Mormon" trail, some of which was the same as the Oregon and California trails used by almost all the settlers of the western territories. His book became one of the most popular of the many guides printed in the 19th century for the use of travelers because of the precision of his accounts.
The current edition contains a biographical and historical introduction to put Clayton's guide in perspective and provide information about him personally and about the Latter-day Saint emigration to their Zion. The facsimile of his book is annotated with corrections to his mileage, commentary about the landmarks and locations, and updates on their situation still of use to the traveler today who wants to understand or emulate their journey.
