'Gloriously provocative... female sexuality within a patriarchal world is Chughtai's central concern' Kamila Shamsie, winner of the Women's Prize for Fiction 2018, from the introduction Lifting the Veil is a bold and irreverent collection of writing from India's most controversial feminist writer. These stories celebrate life in all its complexities: from a woman who refuses marriage to a man she loves to preserve her freedom, to a Hindu and a Muslim teenager pulled apart by societal pressures, to eye-opening personal accounts of the charges of obscenity the author faced in court for stories found in this book. This is a collection of short stories written by a controversial woman author, far ahead of her time. The stories are quite direct in nature (for Urdu authors) and deal with such issues as gender roles, politics, religion, marriage and relationships in India/Pakistan. Chughtai has been compared to Saadat Hasan Manto and this collection bears an essay of Chughtai's which discusses their ongoing relationship as kindred authors. This is a must read for anyone studying Indian/Pakistani literature. Her stories are still inspiring today, even though they were written more than fifty years ago. Her short story "The quilt," was quite controversial because it depicted same sex relationships. My favorites, however are: "Kafir," "The Homemaker," "the Mole," "Touch me not," "Quit India," "Gainda" and "Vocation."
I hope that you enjoy them.
