In this splendid and playful volume, acclaimed poetry anthologist Paul B. Janeczko and Caldecott Honor illustrator Chris Raschka present lively examples of twenty-nine poetic forms, demonstrating not only the (sometimes bendable) rules of poetry, but also the spirit that brings these forms so wonderfully to life. Featuring formal poems, some familiar and some never before published, from the likes of Eleanor Farjeon (aubade), X.J. Kennedy (elegy), Ogden Nash (couplet), Liz Rosenberg (pantoum), and William Shakespeare, the sonnet king himself, A Kick in the Head perfectly illustrates Robert Frost's maxim that poetry without rules is like a tennis match without a net.… (mehr)

A collection of poems in many different poetic forms with visual representations. Helps teach different poetry terms. ( )

Incredibly useful for students doing a unit on poetry: it includes many forms (haiku, limerick, etc.), each with an example, a definition and explanation of how to write one, and an illustration. I especially loved the limerick.

There once was a limerick called Steven
whose rhyme scheme was very uneven
it didn't make sense
it wasn't funny
and who'd call a limerick Steven anyway?
-Steven Herrick

I think this is a fantastic poetry book! This book is a collection of poems by a multitude of authors. Every page include four things: the type of poem, a description of the type, an illustration and the poem itself. This book is perfect for anyone that wants to learn more about poems. There are 29 different types of poems in this book! At the end of the book there are longer explanations of each type of poem. The images on each page create a stronger mood throughout the book. I think this is a great book for teachers to use with higher elementary grades during a poetry lesson. It does a great job showing the differences and similarities between poems. ( )

A simply fabulous resource for you and your children in the classroom. Not only is the book filled with multiple forms of poetry, but the type of poetry is listed on each page, and a section in back breaks down each by characteristics and gives a bit of history about the style as well. ( )

This book is full of diverse kinds of poetry. Each page contains a great story while capturing readers with the rhymes and unique patterns that they do not usually find in normal books. Every page tells the readers the kind of poetry they are reading and what defines it as unique. This book is good to teach poetry and all of the different forms and artistic creativity possible when using poetry. ( )
