Se ia lumea super-dură a lui Dickens, se umflă cu steroizi și se adaugă foamete descrisă la fel de realist ca Holodomorul, furturi, crime, adultere, rebeliuni, sex, epurare etnică, cruzime față de animale, lipsă totală de umanitate sau milă... și iese o carte care te lasă cu un nod amar în gât.
Nota e undeva între 4 și 5, pentru că vreo 60% este incredibilă, dar ultimii 40% scade ritmul și devine mai puțin captivantă, deși oarecum mai sentimentală. Per total totuși, este deosebită și, deși nu o recomand celor mai slabi de inimă, o să mai caut cărți de Behrens. ( )

Romanzo storico che parte dalla carestia in Irlanda. L’ho iniziato a leggere in un ristorante di Shenzen. Il romanzo racconta la storia di Fergus, un giovane contadino irlandese nella metà del diciannovesimo secolo. Fergus nella sua poverissima terra gioca, vive le contrapposizioni sociali con serenità, come la sua famiglia continuamente sottoposta alle angherie del fattore e dei proprietari della terra. Ma il cibo è sufficiente per undici mesi all’anno; la fame è riservata al mese in cui si attende la maturazione delle patate. Ma poi succede che le patate si ammalano, sono nere come la terra in cui crescono. E l’Irlanda viene devastata dalla carestia. La famiglia di Fergus non vuole lasciare l’Irlanda per emigrare verso una nuova vita. Ed è una scelta che condanna alla fame, prima, ed alla morte, poi. E così Fergus inizia un lungo viaggio, prima in Irlanda, una terra magica che si è trasformata in un inferno; e vive il suo primo grande amore e le sue prime vere avventure da povero, da emarginato. Arrivato a Dublino si imbarca per l’Inghilterra dove trova lavoro in uno stabilimento ferroviario dove conosce Molly, beata Irlanda, si innamora e decide di partire con lei per il Canada. E così uccidono l’uomo con cui Molly vive e si imbarcano da Liverpool. La storia della traversata è molto intensa, avvincente. Fergus viene tradito da Molly ed arrivato in Quebec, dopo una vera Odissea, l’abbandona. Per partire verso una nuova vita. Non è un libro banale, Behrens è davvero bravo a tenere il lettore avvinghiato alle pagine. ( )

A rather lengthy novel about a young man and his plight to seek a better life amidst the ravages of the Irish Potato Famine. However, the author wanders about his prose and, although there are good bits, there seems to be a lot of filler included to extend the book. I understand that Behrens was trying to capture a certain point of time in history, but I felt that there was a little too much detail on some parts and not enough on others. Nevertheless, despite this, it was not a bad read. Yet, I daresay it was not a good one either.

I loved this book. It felt like there was not one superfluous word. It is a lyrical, unfolding story, told as the author imagines his grandfather's experience of leaving Ireland for Canada as a young man, after the Potato Famine. ( )

This is the story of a teenage boy, Fergus, who manages to escape the potato famine and death that plagues his family and neighbours in an area of Ireland near Limerick. It traces his journey from his homestead to a gang of bog boys and then to Liverpool where he is able to recover from his extreme poverty and disease. He then ventures to a railroad work camp in Wales where he is able to ensure a subsistence life. With all their savings, Fergus leaves with Molly, a railroad wife for North America aboard a ship called the Laramie. They are surrounded by others in the same dire situation. This is well written and very poetic. Given its nature, the story is depressing as it outlines the extremes to which these folks are subjected. The law of dreams is to keep moving, which is what Fergus continues to do throughout the story. There is a glimmer of hope at the end that he might actually break out of his cycle of bad luck and survive with a little more prosperity. ( )
