I went out on my annual buy-nephew-a-book spree last night. Unfortunately, he's not old enough for this yet. But I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Ethan can't sleep. There's no monster under his bed. He twists and turns a bit, but it's no use. He knocks on the floor (I love this) to summon a parade of substitute monsters.

The artwork is something I suspect will be love-it or hate-it for many people: an ultra-saturated, photo-realistic to the point of unreality kind of illustration. I love it, especially for the subject. There are a few reviews complaining about the dismissal of the girl monster because she's a girl. She's a girl monster hiding under the bed of a little boy, people. His dismissal was completely sensible, not at all disrespectful, and totally in keeping with the fact that he's, you know, a little boy. To each her own, I suppose.

I will keep this in the back of my mind for when nephew is a bit older. ( )

This book was cute but creepy in my opinion. I like how the child like monsters but is also kinda afraid of them because I think that is how most people feel well at least I know that for me.

Ethan can't sleep without his monster, Gabe hiding under his bed. They hire a substitute to come in and do the job. However, it's just not the same. Ethan is about to give up, when Gabe returns. The pictures in this book are vivid and create a fantastic picture for the reader and listener. ( )

I liked the concept, but didn't appreciate the gendering: "boys need boy monsters and girls need girl monsters". ( )

This story is another great read for young students. This silly, tale of a young girl and the monster under her bed shows the friendship of two different characters. The illustrations are cartoon like drawings which appear to be used with a computer animation. The lines and color choice the illustrator used creates a Halloween type read for young imaginers to dream about. This story tells a different perspective about how a young boy is not afraid of his monster under his bed but instead insists on having a monster under his bed. The boy and the monster develop a well rounded friendship that keeps young children laughing. This read is great for children who are scared before bed time! Remind them that not all monsters under their bed are scary. ( )
