I read this book because my son read it as a history class assignment....and I was curious. He didn't like it, I did. This is a well written story. The poignancy and characters are believable; it is 'real life' not a story to be tied up neatly at the end...and that made it a tough book for me to read. I wish I had read this book as part of a book club - I would have loved to discuss the issues with others. As an adult in today's society I know of the turbulent 60's; However, I witnessed none of the turbulence or struggles that went on. But I was able to recognize the era and relate to the book's characters and their struggles. It was not an easy book to read - however, I am glad to have read the story and think that this book needs to be read by everyone at least once. I keep good books, to read again and again...I've kept this book knowing that someday I will be able to face the realities again and learn more the second time around. I would definitely recommend this book to book clubs! ( ) keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

Lucy Conyers lives with her brothers, mother, and stepfather in Tallahassee, in the last house in the white part of town, just before the pavement ends and the road turns to dirt. On the other side of a patch of woods are Melvina Williams, the Conyers' maid, her drunken husband Old Alfonso, and a yard full of kids, mostly boys -- including Lucy's obsession, the wild and handsome Skippy.
