Andrew "Ender" Wiggin was not the only child in the Battle School; he was just the best of the best. Card tells the story of another of those precocious generals, the one they called Bean who became Ender's right hand, in the final battle against the Buggers. Bean's past was a battle just to survive. Hus success brought hin to the attention of the Battle School's recruiters, those people scouring the planet for leaders, tacticians, and generals to save Earth from the threat of alien invasion. Bean was sent into orbit, to the Battle School. And there he met Ender...… (mehr)

This one was much better than [b:Ender in Exile|3220405|Ender in Exile (Ender's Saga, #1.2)|Orson Scott Card|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1442883678s/3220405.jpg|3465687], although you'd definitely be lost if you hadn't read [b:Ender's Game|375802|Ender's Game (Ender's Saga, #1)|Orson Scott Card|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1408303130s/375802.jpg|2422333] first (or even recently), as much in this book relied on explanations already given in EG. Reading them near back-to-back, this didn't bother me (in fact, I rather welcomed not having to re-read nearly identical text), but if Ender's Game wasn't as fresh in my mind I might have been annoyed by this.
That said, I think that Bean is actually a much more interesting character than Ender, although his story is even MORE implausible, despite whatever genetic enhancements Bean had been exposed to, especially his street urchin background.
I think that I need to take a break from Ender's Universe for a bit, as I don't have any interest in the story that happens back on Earth with Peter becoming the Hegemon, nor of Ender continuing his spiritual trek. ( )

A good refresh on the series since I hadn't read the original in a while. Sets up for the sequels well. I almost want to go back and read the original. ( )

An excellent different perspective by Bean of the events in Ender's Game.

I like this rating system by ashleytylerjohn of LibraryThing (https://www.librarything.com/profile/ashleytylerjohn) that I have also adopted:
(Note: 5 stars = rare and amazing, 4 = quite good book, 3 = a decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful.) ( )

Beans character is an oddity. I enjoyed the character in this one, but less so in the political intrigue that came up later in the Bean series. For the Enders Game story though, this one was impressively fun. The thought of reading the same story from another character was not at all exciting to me, yet this was a fun read. ( )

Ender's Shadow is such a good book. When I started it, I was expecting to read about a shadow. I was expecting the same story that I read in Ender's Game but from a different perspective. That was actually there, but there was so much more besides. There is a set of characters from outside of Ender's Game. And there is a new depth added to characters we met in Ender's Game. Bean's character is very complex from the beginning of this book until the end. And we get to see him grow and mature along the way.

And I must admit that I got rather choked up at the ending. I just finished 10 minutes ago, so maybe I'm still a little high on the ending. But I expect that I'll still consider this a very good book a few days from now after it has all soaked in a little more.

I saw it in several places where the author and even other reviewers pointed out that each of these two books (Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow) stands on its own. They say you can read either one or both. And while they said that it did not matter which you read first, I would recommend that you read Ender's Game first. That's just one man's opinion, but when you are all done, I think you will agree.

To Orson Scott Card I must say "Well Done!". ( )
