Composed of a series of unpublished letters between Julio Cort#65533;zar, his wife Carol Dunlop, and the translator Silvia Monr#65533;s-Stojakovic, this volume presents three first-rate writers at their most unguarded and very best. Cort#65533;zar is Cort#65533;zar, of course; Monr#65533;s-Stojakovic proves herself an agile and witty writer, offering insights into the tense social and political situation in Belgrade in the early 1980s; and Dunlop, coauthor with Cort#65533;zar of Autonauts of the Cosmoroute, writes in a hesitant but highly evocative Spanish, revealing details that will be of particular interest to Cort#65533;zar aficionados. The letters unspool a narrative thread of high literary value--a story in which Cort#65533;zar and Dunlop are the protagonists--and provides previously unknown biographical details. Para los que siguen a Cortázar y quieren saber más del genial escritor argentino, esta es una gran ocasión de mirar al fondo de los sentimientos que tuvo el escritor cuando Carol Dunlop, la Osita, fallece dejándole sumido en una gran tristeza, “estoy tan solo y deshabitado” dice en una de las cartas a Silvia.Este asomo a estas vidas escritas nos permite conocer la situación de los Balcanes durante la época, la ajetreada agenda de Cortázar, su amor por Nicaragua y cómo estaban tan metidos en el proyecto de “Los autonautas de la cosmopista”, con un entusiasmo inocente y juvenil.
Pero es esta correspondencia una historia de amor: a la amistad, amor entre un hombre y una mujer y amor a los libros y a la literatura. Se vive cuando se lee un entusiasmo vital apasionante y unas ganas locas de vivir. Es también la crónica de una enfermedad que se llevó a Carol Dunlop y a Cortázar y que le toca vivir a Silvia, quien se queda sola si la amistad de esta pareja excepcional y que sume en un triste silencio su experiencia.
