Brooklyn's famed neighborhood of Park Slope has it all: the sprawling, majestic Prospect Park; acclaimed public schools; historic brownstones; and progressive values. The more upwardly mobile New Yorkers discover its virtues, the more that claiming a stake in Park Slope becomes a competitive sport. In the park, the coffee shops, and the playgrounds of the neighborhood, four women's lives collide one long, hot Brooklyn summer. Melora Leigh, a two-time Oscar-winning actress, frustrated with her career and the pressures of raising her adoptive toddler, feels the seductive pull of kleptomania; Rebecca Rose, missing the robust sex life of her pre-motherhood days, begins a dangerous flirtation with a handsome local celebrity; Lizzie O'Donnell, a former lesbian (or "hasbian"), wonders why she is still drawn to women in spite of her sexy husband and adorable son; and Karen Bryan Shapiro finds herself split between two powerful obsessions: her four-year-old son's well-being and snagging the ultimate three-bedroom apartment in a well-maintained P.S. 321-zoned co-op building. As the women's paths intertwine (and sometimes crash), each must struggle to keep her man, her sanity, and her play dates.… (mehr)

A little trashy, a little funny. Captures some of Park Slope fairly well but still rang tinny. ( )

I am not a prude and since I grew up in Park Slope I thought this would be a good read. Well I was surprised because in the first 50 pages I realized I was reading smut. I did not go any further because it was just too low. ( )

I had to create a new bookshelf for this whiny mess of a book- "never gonna finish". I could only stand it for 40 pages or so. I just couldn't stand the characters- totally self involved and focused on their yuppie little lives in NYC and how unfulfilled they are. Ugh- get a life, people!

I have to admit that I almost stopped reading after the first few chapters but I thought, let me keep going to see how this turns out. I did finish the book but it wasn't one that resonates with me after I closed the cover. The characters seemed flat and I wasn't really drawn to any of them. A quote on the front of the book from Lauren Weisberger says, "Makes Desperate Housewives look like amateur hour." As I was reading, I can picture this book as a weekly television show and see it working, it just didn't seem to work in book form. There were several short chapters that I wondered why they had been included, as the character for that short chapter had not appeared prior and did not appear afterwards. It seemed a bit disjointed and random and felt it could have been edited better to take those parts out. The writing was mediocre and I felt it and the story could have been more developed. I am not discouraging others from trying this book, it just wasn't my cup of tea. ( )

Prospect Park West by Amy Sohn chronicles the lives of four SAHM's in Brooklyn's Park Slope neighborhood. Park Slope is an area in Brooklyn filled with "bourgeois bohemian breeders" - it is a socially progressive enclave just outside Manhattan filled with couples with young children in classic brownstone homes.

Prospect Park West is not all Bugaboo strollers and trips to the Park - the four Moms whose stories are each featured in the novel are grappling with much more than just what to make for dinner and when to schedule the playdates. Lizzie, mother to her biracial son Manse, is a former lesbian and in the wake of her husband's frequent absences while he tours with his band she finds herself drawn to women again. Rebecca, a freelance writer working part time, mourns the loss of her once very active sex life with husband Theo - she loves her daughter Abbie but finds herself in competition with the toddler for her husband's attention. Melora is an actress married to her husband Stuart, a film director. They live in their mansion with their son Orion and their Swedish nanny while trying to walk the line of putting themselves in the public eye and live a private life. Finally Karen, slightly neurotic mother to Darby, dedicates herself to finding the perfect apartment in a brownstone in a coveted school district despite her husband's reluctance to spend exorbitantly to get said apartment. All this takes place against the backdrop of the Park Slope Food Co-op, Prospect Park and swanky 5th Avenue in Brooklyn.

I love the snarky tone of this novel - the author pokes fun at the neighborhood and its residents. I thought it was great that Sohn offers insight into the darker side of motherhood which can be filled with doubts and ambivalence. Although the main characters' stories seem outlandish at times, there is a lot of truth that runs through each storyline which makes it relateable while also entertaining. The entertainment factor is big in the novel - a quote from author Lauren Weisberger promises "Makes Desperate Housewives look like amateur hour" and the book does not disappoint! Warning - if you are easily offended by language or graphic sex scenes, they abound in this book. All in all, an engaging beach read!
