This book explores the adventures of John Muir to Alaska, who was a naturalist, conservationist, writer, and explorer. John Muir travels to the glaciers in Alaska with a dog name Stickeen. Throughout the book, their journey becomes very grueling as they struggle to get back to their camp. The illustrations in this book are well done as it captures the reader's attention of the harsh winter that helps the reader to visualize the characters' struggles throughout the journey in the glaciers. Themes like endurance and courage are covered in this picture book and I like how it is illustrated through the endurance and courage John Muir and his dog companion has gone through by traveling to the glaciers back to their camp. All in all, it was adventurous and informative to read about the journey of John Muir and his exploration in the glaciers in Alaska. ( )

The story has an unusual beginning as there is no true introduction of how or why John Muir is on a glacier, the adventure simply begins instantly with suspense until the end. This is an exciting adventure that intrigues the reader to wonder if John and Stickeen are going to survive the harsh wilderness.

The illustrations of this book are enchanting as the illustrator captures the brutal Alaskan winter that allows the reader to be chilled from the pictures and feel the characters' struggles as they cross the glacier.

The story expresses bravery and companionship of Stickeen the dog, which I loved. I also enjoyed the suspense from the book and feel as though young readers would as well. I personally think this would be a great book for a read aloud with the adventure and suspense created by the author, and the students can explore the work of John Muir. ( )
