As they become part of fashionable London society they encounter the glamorous socialite Rosamund Harwell and her wealthy impressario husband Laurence. Unlike the Wimseys, they are not in love - and all too soon, one of them is dead. A murder case that only Lord Peter Wimsey can solve.… (mehr)

I liked this book. It seemed like a good continuation of the Sayers mysteries. However, the mystery had places where some of the clues should have been obvious but weren't picked up on until later. I'm going to read at least one more of the books that Walsh has written ( )

I thought Jill Paton Walsh did a great job of finishing this story begun by Dorothy Sayers. It takes place very shortly after her final complete book about Lord Peter and Harriet Vane, and I couldn't tell what was Sayers and what was Walsh. To me it was pretty seamless. Strangely enough, I think this book was my introduction to Lord Peter years ago, as it was the only one my library had. Then I had to go and find Sayers' original novels. ( )

It's so dangerous to take on another author's characters, so I was relieved to find myself enjoying Walsh's take on Harriet and Peter. It was lovely to visit with the coolest couple in British mystery again, even if through a different author's lens. ( )

I suppose it's a bit heretical to like the continuation of the Wimsey/Vane mysteries even better than the originals, but there it is. I love not having to look out for the blatantly racist language that peppers the books from another time, and I love Peter and Harriet together. Gaudy Night and Busman's Honeymoon were always my favorite books of the originals, and it's a tribute to Jill Paton Walsh that her work can flow so seamlessly into Sayers' drafts and plans. So grateful to have these latter day stories, and that are so faithful to the witty wordplay and characters of the earlier books. This audio book version was even read by the same actor as the others, and I am so happy to listen to that reader. ( )

It was evident that something of a portentous sort was coming to call - something that would never have called on Miss Harriet Vane, but was liable at any moment to descend without warning upon Lady Peter Wimsey. Her ladyship, repressing Miss Vane's natural inclination to crane her head out of the window, laid down author's pen and wondered whether she was suitably dressed to receive whatever fairy godmother should descend from this pumpkin equipage.
... he said. 'Besides, hasn't it occurred to you that to be beneficent, a vision does not have to be true?'....Detective stories keep alive a view of the world which ought to be true. Of course people read them for fun, for diversion, as they do crossword puzzles. But underneath they feed a hunger for justice, and heaven help us if ordinary people cease to feel that.'
'I once heard Peter say the first thing a principle does is to kill people,' said Harriet.
... sternly admonishing herself with the rule that the reader's interest in description is quickly exhausted...
... nice ebony inkstand with cut-glass inkwells and silver mounts, rather spoiled, I thought, by somewhat moth-eaten goose-quill pen, with all the feathering removed from one side. Foolishly wondered aloud why Peter had not bought a nice silver fountain pen in Garrard's while he was about it, but it seems the inkstand was bought just to set off the ancient quill pen, point of which is that it had belonged to Sheridan le Fanu. Felt somewhat out of depth.
