Kurb, ilus ja õnneliku lõpuga, nagu üks õige muinasjutt olema peabki. Väga värskendavalt väikeprintsilik praegusel roosamannanunnuajastul. Vaimustavad illustratsioonid.

Ja siit veel veidi.

Meh. It was like DiCamillo was trying too hard to make this feel special. I found it annoying that it was so repetitive. The characters all say the same things over and over. The boy Peter is always taking his hat on and off.

And the worst part was the reader absolutely knows Peter's going to find his sister and the magician will send the elephant home so there was no real drama. The finding of the sister and sending home of the elephant were not even that exciting or interesting.

I'm a big fan of Winn-Dixie and Despereaux, so this was disappointing. ( )

What if? Why not? Could it be?
When a fortuneteller's tent appears in the market square of the city of Baltese, orphan Peter Augustus Duchene knows the questions that he needs to ask: Does his sister still live? And if so, how can he find her? The fortuneteller's mysterious answer (an elephant! An elephant will lead him there!) sets off a chain of events so remarkable, so impossible, that you will hardly dare to believe it's true. With atmospheric illustrations by fine artist Yoko Tanaka, here is a dreamlike and captivating tale that could only be narrated by Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo. In this timeless fable, she evokes the largest of themes -- hope and belonging, desire and compassion -- with the lightness of a magician's touch.

Kate DiCamillo is a best selling, award winning children's author who pens the most wonderful books. One of those awesome books is The Magician's Elephant.

"At the end of the century before last, in the market square of the city of Baltese there stood a boy with a hat on his head and a coin in his hand."

But rather than buying the food his guardian has asked him to purchase, ten year old Peter instead spends the coin at the fortuneteller's tent. He needs an answer - where is his younger sister? And the answer? It involves an elephant...

The Magician's Elephant reads like a fairy tale, with all the right ingredients. Once upon a time, magic, problems, journeys, morals and more, all on the way to happily ever after. There's a wonderful otherworldly feel to DiCamillo's prose. The reader can't help be drawn into the tale. There are also some wonderful illustrations from YoKo Tanaka that match the feel and tone of the book.

While the book is listed as for ages 8-12, I know that adults would enjoy it as well. After all, who doesn't wonder if there's a bit of magic in our world? The Magicians Elephant would also be a great family read and watch!

Netflix is releasing the animated film on Friday, March 17th. I'll be watching. ( )

DiCamillo writes here in a register entirely her own, catching not the whimsical-fabulous note of earlier masters for young readers, nor the jokey-realistic one that has too often taken its place, but instead a mood of sober magic that unfolds into something that can be called, without pejorative, “sentimental,” meaning straightforward and heartfelt. The style may evoke Calvino, but the substance belongs to Christmas.
